About David C. Dove, Ph.D.


David C. Dove received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the George Washington University in Washington DC.  He concluded his training at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University in a postgraduate fellowship that included clinical work at Rhode Island Hospital and Bradley Hospital.  He has clinical expertise in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, adolescent development, and family therapy.

Dr. Dove’s philosophy of treatment is based on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy and family systems theory.  At the same time, he integrates other evidence-based treatment modalities to suit each individual's goals.  Dr. Dove's primary aim is to help clients function better by addressing psychological and behavioral health issues.  He helps clients to apply effective ways of coping with challenging changes, difficult experiences, and interpersonal problems.

In addition to conducting psychotherapy and psychological assessments, he serves as a research consultant for research on behavioral health interventions, prevention, and human development.  Specific research foci have included:

  • Adolescent health and development
  • Programs to prevent and treat depression, substance abuse, and adolescent risk behaviors
  • Mental health and cultural issues among African Americans and Latinos, and among sexual minorities
